I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect “Welcome to Oaxaca” meal than my dinner at Los Danzantes, a farm-to-table restaurant in the heart of downtown Oaxaca.

Ran by the talented Chef Alex Burgos, the popular farm-to-table restaurant is known for their house-branded Mezcal cocktails, mole tastings, and the annually anticipated tasting menu inspired by the teams wild mushroom foraging adventures.
Mole Tasting
Did you go to Oaxaca if you don’t try a bunch of moles? For those looking to explore the classic Mexican sauce, the mole tasting at Los Danzantes is a great introduction.
This was my first time trying yellow mole, and I could have drank it by the gallon. The tasting also includes red, black and manchamanteles mole (a sweet and spicy mole that literally translated to “tablecloth-stainer”) served with their homemade blue corn tortillas.
Elegant Stranger Cocktail
You know I love a spicy cocktail and if it’s on the menu, I’m going to order it. The Perfect Stranger cocktail is blended with their house mezcal, aperol, yellow chartreuse, lime juice, Ancho Reyes Verde and a dash of Mexican pasilla chili. I’m definitely going to try to recreate this at home!
Because my timing is always perfect, the day of my visit was one of the last days to experience Chef Alex Burgos’ highly anticipated #TemporadaDeHongos. The seasonal menu explores various presentations and preparations of the wild mushrooms from the team’s annual foraging excursion.
Magret de Pato
Of course I ordered the duck! The buttery, sous vide duck breast is paired with seasonal mushrooms, peach puree and a confit mushroom tapenade. This was easily one of the best things I ate in Mexico. during my entire time in Mexico.
Dessert
I saved room for dessert and had no regrets. The black forest sponge cake is layered with white chocolate mousse and seasonal fruit jam. It was equal parts decadent and refreshing. 5/5 recommend.
Final Thoughts on Los Danzantes
Seriously, this is a must-try restaurant – good service with even better food and drinks. As soon as I get back to Oaxaca, it’ll be one of my first stops for dinner. It really is the perfect “Welcome to Oaxaca” meal.
