Diary: Happy Birthday to Me and This Blog!

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I picked a terrible year to be more serious about travel & food writing.

I’m supposed to be up to my  eyeballs in pasta off the coast of Italy right now. Or fighting off an afternoon nap after a day of Mezcal tasting in the valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico. Unfortunately, neither of these foodie fantasies are my reality, because there’s a global pandemic outside and I opted to stay home.

Today is my birthday, so happy birthday to me! That means it’s also the 4th birthday/anniversary of Black Girl Meets World… which was launched 2 years after my first international solo trip to Paris, France. I’m grateful to have some wonderful travel and food memories tied to this special day.

I finally reconciled the fact that the world of travel and food looks completely different than it did four years ago when I launched this blog.

I’m also laughing that 2020 was supposed to be the year I dug in and got serious about my writing in this space.

While I mourn the half dozen trips that I had to cancel in 2020, I’m going to pat myself on the back because this was still the most productive year, content wise.

Sitting still (and mostly at home) gave me the opportunity to reimagine and refine the vision I have for Black Girl Meets World.

The world is a completely different place in just 7 painfully long months! I’m anxious to explore and experience it all for what will undoubtedly feel like the first time. I can’t imagine the Louvre with a modest crowd. I am longing to people watch in a busy open air market. Places I’ve been a dozen times won’t be the same, and I can’t wait to explore it all.

Until then, I’m still committed to giving my hometown my heart and explore the world that exists right in my backyard. Hi, Houston.

Houston is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the United States. Finding foodie adventures that transport me half way across the world should be an easy task, right? Well, we’re about to find out.

I’m officially on vacation from my corporate job for the next 9 days and I’m bubbling with joy! This means I have nothing but time to commemorate 4 years of Black Girl Meets World with foodie experiences.

I look forward to sharing them with you. Happy Birthday, Black Girl Meets World. Thank you four years! 💕

Now, what’s for dinner?

In a city with 10,000+ restaurants, picking the restaurant for my special day proved harder than I imagined. Would I go to one of my old faithful foodie spots like Lucille’s or Xochi? Did I want to try something new? Which cuisine did I have a taste for? Find out here!
