Welp! I know I said I hate road trips, but the first leg of our cross-country adventure may have changed my mind. The USA is BEAUTIFUL! The 9-hour drive from Houston to Memphis wasn’t half bad, and we only have a half day of travel to Louisville. Before we departed, I managed to squeeze in a traveling foodie moment and get breakfast from Blue Plate Cafe, a local-recommended breakfast and lunch diner in downtown Memphis.
Located near Court Square, Blue Plate Cafe is a low-key Southern breakfast cafe. So low-key that they don’t even have a website, so you’ll have to just trust Google to ground guide you then surprise yourself when you get there and look over the menu.
What We Ordered:
I didn’t dine in because I’m still practicing social distancing. Ordering to-go isn’t bad, but I really miss restaurant plating! Nonetheless, we’ll just have to deal with these to-go container shots for the foreseeable future.
I ordered the banana pancakes and, at the cashier’s recommendation, ordered the peanut butter syrup. Best decision ever! The syrup is melted peanut butter mixed in with regular syrup, and it sets the fluffy pancakes off!
My friend kept it simple with french toast and bacon. I didn’t taste it, but the smell of cinnamon and vanilla told me all I needed to know.
I was a bit less ambitious with the sides and ordered city ham and hash browns (not pictured.) City ham was good and salty, which balanced out the sweetness of the banana pancakes. The potatoes were really flavorful with the perfect texture – crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Final Thoughts on Blue Plate Cafe
This is great for a hearty, no-fuss breakfast! Considering I spent less than 12 hours in Memphis and only had one shot at a foodie experience… this was a solid choice.
