A group of Southern women found soul food in San Francisco and lived to write a recap! farmerbrown, located in the Tenderloin neighborhood a few blocks from our Union Square hotel, serves soul food with a generous portion of charm. This celebrated black-owned restaurant was the highlight of our short weekend getaway, and the welcomed foodie experience we needed.
Brunch at farmerbrown
farmerbrown’s quaint interior design is funky industrial. Bright colors paired paired perfectly with weathered metal and wood accents, and it all came together in harmony to showcase the works of Black visual artists. The farmerbrown staff graciously pulled two tables together to accommodate our party of six.
Drinks
I’m a brunch cocktail kinda gal, and farmerbrown’s Bourbon Iced Tea did not disappoint. Crafted with bourbon, fruit nectar, ginger syrup, brewed tea and mint, this was refreshingly delicious!
Banana Fosters French Toast
I think about this french toast often! Each slice was perfectly battered and fried with a delicious banana foster sauce and fresh bananas. I’m also a sucker for edible flowers, so there’s that.
Fried Chicken and Greens
Are you a soul food restaurant if you don’t have fried chicken? As a Southern woman, I particular about my fried chicken, but these rose to the occasion. Good spice blend, juicy chicken, and a crunchy batter.
Fried Fish
You know I’ve been cursed with the inability to eat fish due to food allergies, but I polled my trusted fried fish aficionados and they agreed the farmerbrown’s fried fish is a must-order. I took their word for it, and you should, too.
House Hot Sauce
Saying that I’d slather farmerbrown’s Sweet Heat sauce on just about anything is not hyperbole, because it’s THAT good. The honey jalapeno sauce delivered a perfect balance of sweetness, tang, and heat. The fried chicken is an obvious pairing, but it works well on the fried fish, potatoes and egg dishes.
Final Thoughts on farmebrown
farmerbrown offers friendly service and delicious food. If you’re in San Francisco proper, you can’t go wrong with adding farmerbrown to your itinerary!
