Thanks to Instagram I found out there’s a Black-women owned winery in my backyard! Well, close to my backyard. Located in the Katy suburbs, just west of Houston, ErmaRose Winery specializes in a variety of fruit wines like mango, peach, blueberry, and banana! Yes, banana wine is a thing (and it’s good.)

A few friends met me at ErmaRose Winery for their wine tasting while we caught up on our post-quarantine lives. We opted for the outdoor seating where several large, round tables were shaded by huge trees – anything for relief from the Texas sun. The ErmaRose staff welcomed us and let us know the experience modifications in place to adhere to COVID-19 precautions. At the time of our visit, all tables were spaced more than 6 feet apart, the staff wore masks, hand sanitizer was made readily available, and disposable paper menus were distributed to visitors.
The Wine Tasting
ErmaRose Winery offers two wine tasting package- a mini with four tastings and a regular with 8 tastings plus a branded wine glass to take home. The tastings are $5 and $10, respectively. We chose the 8 tastings and each wine was served in order from dry to sweet.
In addition to the tasting flight, you can add any full bottle to your tab to enjoy on the property. Our group opted for one of the crowd favorites – the Masked Gorilla. It’s a sweet dessert wine bursting with fruity flavors like mango, strawberries, melon, and cherries to highlight the tropical blend.
When we completed our tasting, the ErmaRose staff encouraged us to enjoy the live music and food vendors that were setting up. I appreciated that there was no rush to shuffle us out. When it was time for me to leave, I ventured into the wine shop to pick up a few bottles ($13.99-15.99 each), including the Royal Dragonfly. Sangria recipe coming soon!
Final Thoughts on ErmaRose Winery
I enjoyed my visit to ErmaRose Winery! The wine tasting made for a relaxing, socially distanced outing and I snagged a few bottles for to enjoy at home. This is a great activity to add to your “Things to Do in Houston” list! Enjoy responsibly!
