Good Eats: Craft Burger – Houston, TX

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you’ve been keeping up with my foodie adventures, you know I’m eating my way through Houston’s Black-owned restaurants. After my visit to LIT Chicken, I noticed there was another Black-owned restaurant in the next stall over. Yall, there are TWO Black-owned restaurants in Finn Hall! Naturally, I had to double back to check out Craft Burger, a gourmet burger restaurant from The Food Network’s Chopped champion, Chef Shannen Tune.

I’ll admit that I didn’t even order a burger during my first visit to Craft Burger, because the sandwiches were calling me!

Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich

Highlighted as featured on The Food Network, the fried chicken sandwich comes with “all natural and locally sourced” chicken thighs with BBQ sauce and topped with lettuce, tomato, and avocado.

The fresh ingredients shine, and compliment nicely fried chicken thigh coated with the sweet and tangy BBQ sauce.

Loaded Fries

I’m a sucker for loaded fries. Craft Burger’s loaded fries maintain their crisp exterior while covered in bacon, buttermilk ranch, green onions, and cheddar cheese. These are really good and a meal on their own, but if you’re feeling feisty, you can add crispy chicken. I’d absolutely order these again!

Cuban Sandwich

My foodie friend ordered Craft Burger’s Cuban Sandwich. This indulgent sandwich comes with smoked pork shoulder, roasted pork belly, craft pickles, Swiss cheese, mustard, and garlic butter on a toasted roll.

I ordered online (highly recommend) and my order was ready when I arrived. Customer service is friendly and I knew I’d have to come back to try the burgers.

The Craft Burger

I knew I couldn’t publish review of Craft Burger without trying the burgers. Who does that?! So a few days after my initial visit, I went back to Finn Hall and ordered The Craft Burger.

It’s a gourmet burger indeed! With locally sourced Black Angus Beef, melt-y smoked Gouda, tomato jam, and fresh lettuce and tomato, I think the namesake menu item is a must-try. I added their truffle mayo which added an extra kick to the delightfully juicy burger. (I think paying $1 extra for specialty mayo is excessive, but it was so good I won’t file this matter as a foodie grievance.)

Chicken Fried Cheese Curds

I like cheese curds on my poutine, so I was intrigued by the idea of chicken-frying the curds. They are well seasoned and the cheese pull is fun, but they were too dense for my personal preference. Would you try cheese curds?

Final Thoughts on Craft Burger

I’ll certainly return to Finn Hall for a good burger and loaded fries. You can taste the high quality ingredients in every bite, making this gourmet burger joint a great value. If you’re in the downtown area, pop into Finn Hall and check them out.
