Rounding out eight months of “outside is open, but closed” means I’ve gotten really comfortable being at home. I’ve taken virtual cooking classes, slowly built up my inspired mezcal collection, and taken advantage of virtual museum and art gallery visits. Even though most of my Black Girl Meets World adventures have gone digital, I still managed to squeeze in a few backyard adventures like my recent visit to City Orchard Cidery.

Located in the Sawyer Heights neighborhood, City Orchard’s cider garden made for a nice and laidback, outdoor activity. I sat at a covered picnic table with ample space between me and the next table. Everyone was friendly, and our tap room concierge took the time to give me some background on how a cidery ended up in Houston’s backyard.
Since this was intended to be a quick visit, my friend and I opted to try both of City Orchard’s flights – one cider flight and one beer flight. Each flight featured a generous pour and gave me a great insight into the cidery’s offerings. At just ~$10 a flight, it’s a great value!
I’m still working my way up to being a beer enthusiast, so the beer flight was admittedly too advanced for me. I preferred the ciders, especially the florally King Blossom.
Final thoughts on City Orchard
I enjoyed spending time outdoors in the cider garden. The biggest drawback was that I wished the cider flights were customizable, because there were a couple I instinctively knew I wouldn’t like. Nonetheless, there were several ciders that piqued my interest, so I’ll definitely return.
Would you visit a cider brewery? Have you found any cool outdoor activities in your city? I’d love to hear about them!
