Brunch at Traveler’s Table – Houston, TX

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In case you missed it, Houston Restaurants Weeks extended their multi-week fundraiser through the end of September. I took full advantage of their new menu search tool that let’s you filter for patio seating (and to-go options) and landed on brunch at Traveler’s Table.

Located in Houston’s bustling Montrose area, Traveler’s Table serves globally-inspired dishes that take diners on a journey without having to check in at IAH. Although the weather took a break from its hellish temperatures, their outdoor seating area is covered with circulating fans to keep a nice breeze flowing in the open-air space.

For Houston Restaurant Weeks, the $20 prix fixe menu features 2-courses with several choices from their most popular brunch items. I’m typically a savory brunch kinda gal, but my best friend and I decided to go in on the sweet breakfast breads – with a tropical fruit bowl on the side, because balance.

First Course

Morning Churros

I love churros! I don’t need an occasion or to even wait for dessert. If churros are on the menu, they’re getting ordered. Traveler’s Table serves theirs with a trio of dipping sauces: Mexican hot chocolate, cajeta – a goat’s milk caramel, and strawberry atole.

Housemade Biscuits

Flaky, warm biscuits served with honey butter and melted Mexican hot chocolate.

Second Course

Hawaiian Pancakes

Simply put, this dish missed the mark for me. The pancakes were thin and lacked any discernible banana flavor. However, the guava cream and coconut caramel were delicious and paired best with the side of ripe tropical fruit. Considering how imaginative Traveler’s Table menu presents, there’s nothing conceptually interesting about these pancakes.

If it’s your first brunch at Traveler’s Table, I’d say skip the pancakes and try something else that achieves the restaurant’s goal to take you around the globe. Between the french toast and the pancakes – go for the french toast.

Custard Lava French Toast

Of the two sweet brunch offerings, the stuffed french toast was the obvious winner.

This Asian-inspired milk bread is stuffed with custard and served with a jackfruit crème anglaise and assortment of fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries and dragon fruit.

Final Thoughts on Brunch at Traveler’s Table

I appreciated the thoughtfully curated ingredients, welcoming staff, and the delightful ambiance. While the pancakes fell short, I enjoyed everything else I tried enough to guarantee I’d return to Traveler’s Table! Next time, I’ll skip the breakfast breads and try something more enticing like their Indian Eggs Masala or the Lebanese Manoush flatbread.

I’m so glad Houston Restaurant Weeks was extended through September. That means more time to support Houston’s restaurants while supporting Houston Food Bank for #HungerActionMonth. As a reminder, I’m still raising money for #SettheTable campaign. Full details here.
